Kids Tri Athlete Spotlight: Clark Steffen

Kids Tri Athlete Spotlight: Clark Steffen

Just a few short years ago, Clark Steffen was a determined young athlete lining up at the start of the HEAT Kids Triathlon. In 2021, he captured the top spot as overall winner,  showcasing early promise with a mix of speed, grit, and enthusiasm.

Fast forward to today, Steffen is now one of the nation’s top Junior Elite triathletes, with an eighth-place finish at Junior Elite Draft-Legal Nationals, USA Triathlon All-American honors and two State Triathlon Championship titles.

While the young athlete of 2021 relied on raw talent and determination, today’s Steffen is a polished competitor, balancing rigorous training with tactical execution. As he continues to evolve and grow as an athlete, he remains grounded in what drew him to the sport. “The thing I enjoy most about triathlon is the camaraderie around all of the athletes,” Steffen said. “No matter what race it is, everyone is very supportive of each other. Whether it’s your first race, or you’re a veteran of the sport, everyone supports each other on the course.”

Now, Steffen is preparing for his next challenge: University of Arizona. This fall, he will continue competing at the next level, testing himself against some of the best athletes in the country and beyond.

Steffen encourages younger athletes to take a balanced approach to development. “Do it all and never give up,” he said. “Burnout and injury today are so common, and focusing on one sport too young is very difficult. Play multiple sports, have fun, keep working hard, and everything will fall right into place.”  From a youth triathlon winner to a national-level competitor, Clark Steffen’s story shows what can happen when passion, hard work and a positive attitude all come together
